Viva 1910…or…You can’t go home again but you can live in the same neighborhood

Posted on July 31, 2009, under Sekalaista, Uutiset.

Resistance to changing the culture we now possess (or possesses us?), a culture that is arguably fatally destructive to the biosphere, includes the argument that we can’t go back to the way we used to live 100 years ago or some other harsher time where we tied our shoes, cleaned floors with mops, and (God forbid) churned butter.

10 Minute Charge for Student-Built Electric Car

We are familiar with the better qualities of electric vehicles. They use alternative energy and leave less carbon footprints on the climate. But they are still not mass produced. They have many drawbacks and one has to find a remedy for such disadvantages. One of the hurdles in making them vehicles of masses is [...]

Hedcor revises hydro power plant design for mutually beneficial use of Tamugan River

Posted on July 30, 2009, under Polttoaineet, Sekalaista, Uutiset.

Hedcor revised hydro power plant design for mutually beneficial use of Tamugan RiverJust recently it was announced that Hedcor, developer of the Tamugan hydro electric power project, had submitted to its main rival, the Davao City Water District (DCWD), a compromise proposal for use of the Tamugan river in order to achieve a “win-win” situation for both parties on the use of the river.

Basically it will mean that Hedcor will only build one hydro electric power plant on the site instead of the planned two and move the plant to a higher elevation. Redesign is expected to be finished in 6 months.

The original plan had two cascading run-of-river hydropower plants. It would have consisted of the upstream 7.5 MW Panigan plant tapping the Panigan River and the downstream 20 MW Tamugan Plant tapping the Tamugan River. Both plants would have generated 27.5 MW of power for the grid.

Because of this the planned capacity of the hydro electric project would be reduced to 18MW along with total cost of construction. From the original P6 Billion it would now only cost P5.2 Billion.

DCWD had opposed Hedcor’s hydro electric power plant project because they said that it would dry up the river and in turn its supply of water to Davao City’s watershed..

Thebattle for the use of the Tamugan river had dragged on for such a long time that even the city Mayor was called into mediate. DCWD had prior rights to the use of the river due to a permit given to them by the National Water Resources Board. However on a recent ruling, the NWRB had denied DCWD’s objection to Hedcor’s use of the river while also granting user rights to Hedcor. Despite the setback, DCWD announced that it was still pressing on with legal action to block Hedcor’s power plant project.

Failed nuclear power station becomes solar power station

Posted on July 28, 2009, under Polttoaineet, Sekalaista, Uutiset.

How can you not be lured by a headline like this: “Nuclear power goes solar”? Or so says a piece of news posted on the Greenpeace website a few days ago. So what’s it all about?

Well, a former nuclear power station in Austria has been reopened as a solar power station. Yes, you read it right. According to the report, the Zwentendorf nuclear plant was never operated and has been mothballed since the 1970s. On Saturday it opened for clean energy business (to the tune of 1.2 million euros) as the largest solar power station in Austria.

Greenpeece was invited to hang a banner from the station. The organization chose to emblazon on the banner the following line: “Energy Revolution -Climate Solution.”

Still according to the report, a 1978 national referendum chose to keep the station inactive and nuclear fuel rods were never inserted into the reactor. Since then, the white elephant has stood dormant by the river Danube. Until last Saturday, that is.

Greenpeace says: “The only safe nuclear power comes from the sun”. Now, that’s an enlightened thing to say. Congratulation to Austria for setting such a great example on renewable energy.
