Good News from the Department of Energy
Posted on July 19, 2010, under Sekalaista, Uutiset.
Sometimes it seems as if little is happening and then suddenly a major shift occurs. This seems true of the Department of Energy (DOE) when it comes to energy use in buildings. The DOE is beginning to take big strides in supporting the reduction of energy use in existing buildings. Retrofit costs are still high and funding difficult to obtain but this should change over the next year. The nation’s consciousness is moving away from new green buildings to impressive energy retrofits of the existing stock.

The WEDAP, is composed of the following Wind Energy Companies: Energy Development Corp., Alternergy Philippine Holdings Corp., Trans Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp., PetroEnergy Resources Corp., UPC Renewables and Northwind Power Development Corp.Aside from this they have asked support from the DOE to mark portions of Northern Luzon as wind corridors so that priority can be given to them by the NGCP and related government institutions.

Oilpatch engineer replies to peak oil activist
Posted on July 17, 2010, under Uutiset, Öljyhuippu.
Two regular contributors clash: oilpatch engineer Martin B. Payne and long-time peak oil activist and writer, Jan Lundberg, publisher of Culture Change. In this article, Martin Payne steps back and gives full voice to “the enlightened fossil fuel professional.” Interestingly, the dividing line between activist and oilman is not as sharp as first appears.

Posted on July 16, 2010, under Sekalaista, Uutiset.
Wild Farming is a concept pioneered by conservationist Aldo Leopold and is now taking many forms throughout North America. In this interview I am joined by Joann Baumgartner of the Wild Farm Alliance. The Wild Farm Alliance’s mission is to promote a healthy, viable agriculture that helps protect and restore wild Nature. Topics of discussion include the origins of wild farming, strategies for promoting and conserving biodiversity on the farm, predator friendly farming, continental wildlife corridors, and the price of food as an obstacle to wild farming.

Avoid waste and be green
Posted on July 16, 2010, under Polttoaineet, Sekalaista, Uutiset.
The guys at Do The Green Thing know how to get your attention and put across a green message with a good dose of nonsensical British humor. They have produced a series of videos to show how people can avoid waste by using products they’ve bought to their very end, never leaving anything behind. They say:
“You wouldn’t buy a ticket to a film and walk out half-way through would you? (Unless it had Miley Cyrus in it). Anyway, don’t do that with stuff, use it all up. You know it wants you to.”
They call the concept All-Consuming. We think it’s all good. Obviously the concept is applicable to energy as well: switching to LED and solar lights, insulating the home, unplugging appliances when these are not in use and being generally mindful of energy use are all green things to do. In fact, avoiding unnecessary usage is the ultimate green thing to do. To find out how green you are, click here.

Oil sands cannot save us from peak oil
Posted on July 15, 2010, under Uutiset, Öljyhuippu.
It’s quite nearly universally accepted that the easy-to-reach, cheap oil has been extracted – but is this also the case with Canada’s much-touted oil sands? The startling suggestion has been made by economist and author Jeff Rubin, blogging on the Globe and Mail business pages. He writes that the price of oil must rise in order for Albertan oil to be economically sustainable, as future expansion will be chasing supplies buried deeper underground and further from the available water supply.

Why Power Is Not a Dirty Word
Posted on July 15, 2010, under Sekalaista, Uutiset.
Why are we as societies creating a world that we as individuals abhor? It’s a mind-bending question.
